Is a Leiomyoma Benign or Malignant?

Leiomyomas of the uterus are the commonest benign tumors of the female genital tract. They affect 20–30 % of women older than 35 years. Leiomyomas can undergo various degenerative changes including malignant degeneration.

Is leiomyoma malignant?

Leiomyomas can be solitary or develop as a group of tumors; however, they're benign and don't spread to other parts of the body. In extremely rare occasions, a uterine myoma may become malignant and transform into sarcomas (leiomyosarcoma).

Why is leiomyoma benign?

Leiomyomas, often referred to as myomas or fibroids, are the most common benign tumors of the female pelvis. They are composed of benign monoclonal tumors of smooth muscle cells with extracellular collagen and elastin. Each leiomyoma is encased within a noninfiltrating pseudocapsule of connective tissue.
