Is a northern harrier a raptor?
Northern Harriers are slender, medium-sized raptors with long, fairly broad wings and a long, rounded tail. They have a flat, owl-like face and a small, sharply hooked bill. Harriers often fly with their wings held in a dihedral, or V-shape above the horizontal.
Do northern harriers soar?
They are often called "chameleons" by hawk watchers because they can appear buteo-like in a soar and falcon-like in a glide. Harriers are fairly quiet, but give an emphatic "whew, whew, wee, wee, wee, wee, wee." They are vocal in small groups in winter, giving a high, whine when defending a patch or during aggression.
