Troche is a unique form of dosage that has been in use for several years where drug delivery is concerned. These are small lozenges that dissolve under the tongue (sublingual) or between the gum and cheek within 15 – 30 minutes. The medication gets directly absorbed through the mouth’s mucus membranes.
What is the most common troche?
The most common form, pseudomembranous candidiasis, appears as removable white plaques on any oral mucosal surface (Fig. 20.1). These plaques may be as small as 1–2 mm or may be extensive and widespread. They can be wiped off, leaving an erythematous or even bleeding mucosal surface.
Are troches effective?
Topical treatments can sometimes provide limited and unpredictable absorption. Troches are an effective alternative to a variety of medication forms. Patients that require rapid symptomatic relief can use troches due to the fast-acting absorption and onset of effects.
