BeCl2 has a linear shape with a bond angle of 180 degrees, where as H2O has a bent shape with a bond angle of 104.5 degrees.
Why is BeCl2 linear while sncl2 angular molecule?
In MgCl2, the central atom i.e. the magnesium ion is surrounded by only two bond pairs so there is no repulsion and the compound posses a regular geometry whereas in case of SnCl2 molecule the central atom is surrounded by two bond pairs and two lone pairs of electrons which leads to repulsion among them as a result Oct 8, 2014.
Why does BeCl2 have no lone pairs?
Beryllium will share one valence electron each with the Chlorine atoms so that both the atoms can complete their octet. Hence all the valence electrons are used up, and there are no lone pairs of electrons in this molecule.
