Beowulf is considered an epic poem in that the main character is a hero who travels great distances to prove his strength at impossible odds against supernatural demons and beasts. The poem begins in medias res or simply, “in the middle of things”, a characteristic of the epics of antiquity.

What makes Beowulf different from other heroes?

Beowulf is most heroic when he defeats the dragon. This is not because he is such a strong warrior that even in old age he can defeat a dragon but because he fills the role of a king in his society, showing his bravery while going out to certain death fighting to protect his people.
