Is Drip Edge Mandatory

The IRC now requires a drip edge for all asphalt roof installations and provides direction for its proper installation. Underlayment must lap over the drip edge at the eaves. At the rake edges (the sloped edges that are referred to as “gables” in the code text), the drip edge must be installed over the underlayment.

Do you need drip edge on flat roof?

Drip edge is not necessary in most flat roof installations. During ice storms, drip edge protects roof line during ice dams that can occur during the winter months. At the bottom of the roof, the edge helps gutters direct water away from your house and foundation.

Do all roofs have a drip edge?

The 2012 International Building Code (IBC) requires drip edges for that type of roof. Regardless of the kind of roof you have, we highly recommend installing drip edges. Keep in mind that improper installation of any roofing component can create gaps, rendering any waterproofing solution useless.
