The difference between enamel and lacquer paints lies in their solvents. While enamel paints make use of spirits, there is lacquer to serve the purpose of the thinner, in lacquer paints. Lacquer paints soften over a period of time, whereas enamel paints remain hard for a long time.

Lacquer is considered the best because itβs shinier and thicker, but can bubble and crack if not applied properly. The drying times also are different for lacquer paint vs. enamel paint. Lacquer dries very quickly, enamel a bit slower.
Does enamel paint need lacquer?
Many painters do not recommend lacquer clear coat over fresh enamel because the thinning agent within the lacquer may degrade the enamel paint beneath it. Water based acrylic clear coats can also go over enamels but is known to turn yellowish over time, especially when applied over light colors.
