Is Humus and Peat the Same

Humus, strictly speaking, is organic matter undergoing a process of decay. Peat is really pickled organic matter, in which the decay is prac- tically nil. It is undecayed humus which has been started upon a transition into coal.

Is peat a type of humus?

Humus is the part of the soil that is without structure and is made up of the entirely decomposed remains of plants and animals. Humus can be derived from many different sources, not just sphagnum moss. Peat humus is therefore a specific type of humus.

Is peat and compost the same?

Peat moss and compost are not the same thing. Peat moss is a natural product that’s formed as layers of moss grow over one another. (Peat moss is the bottom layer.) Compost is made as everyday waste materials decompose into nutrient-rich soil.
