Is Nilstat an Antibiotic?

NILSTAT belongs to a group of medicines called antifungal agents. It works by damaging the cell wall of the Candida fungus, causing it to die. NILSTAT only works inside your gut. The amount of NILSTAT absorbed into the bloodstream is minute and therefore is not effective for treating any other infections in your body.

Is nystatin considered an antibiotic?

Nystatin (Mycostatin®, Nilstat®) Nystatin is an antifungal antibiotic produced by Streptomyces noursei. Nystatin exerts its antifungal activity by binding to sterols in the fungal cell membrane. The drug is not active against bacterial and mammalian cells because they do not contain sterols in their cell membrane.

How long can you use Nilstat?

NILSTAT is usually used for two weeks. However, sometimes you may need longer treatment. You must see your doctor if you are not better after three days of treatment or if the symptoms return soon after finishing a course of treatment.
