We don't yet know what causes the inflammation in palindromic rheumatism. Although there may be genetic links, other triggers are likely to play a part, such as infection, hormones or injury. Palindromic rheumatism affects women and men equally. The condition can start at any age, but it rarely affects children.
Is rheumatism hereditary?
While RA isn't hereditary, your genetics can increase your chances of developing this autoimmune disorder. Researchers have established a number of the genetic markers that increase this risk. These genes are associated with the immune system, chronic inflammation, and with RA in particular.
Does palindromic rheumatism go away?
Unlike other forms of arthritis, the symptoms of palindromic arthritis come and go without leaving permanent damage in the joints. The pain may come and go suddenly and can arise in different joints.
