The process of building a protein is called transcription. Building proteins is very much like building a house: The master blueprint is DNA, which contains all the information to build the new protein (house). The working copy of the master blueprint is called messenger RNA (mRNA), which is copied from DNA.

Why is RNA like a set of blueprints?

The blueprints represent messenger RNA because they carry instructions for the building from the office (the “nucleus”) to the outside (“cytoplasm”). The “ribosome” is the job site where the building is being constructed. In the cell, proteins are “built” on the ribosome.

Is DNA like a single blueprint?

DNA is not like a blueprint. DNA does not contain any schematics or other direct information about the structure or appearance of the organism. If you take a single gene from a fish, and insert it into an embryonic tomato plant, then you won’t get a plant that has fins or fish eyes.
