Using a stabiliser where not absolutely necessary can impede the performance of any subsequent coats because it isn't 'breathable' and may keep any natural moisture trapped beneath the wall's surface. This moisture may force itself out eventually and cause the paintwork to bubble and/or subsequently flake-off.
Is sandtex paint breathable?
If we are talking about general purpose masonry Paints, for example Sandtex, Weathershield for example. These product are not Breathable and not suitable for a Historic or Old Building. These types of paint trap moisture and prevent breathability of the walls.
What does sandtex Stabilising solution do?
A colourless stabiliser for chalky surfaces. Thinned with water and is suitable for exterior use. Quick-drying product which primes and stabilises chalking, weathered and porous surfaces.
