Is There Lactose in Butter

Products made with milk, such as cream, cheese, yoghurt, ice cream and butter, also contain lactose and may need to be avoided if you’re lactose intolerant. But the level of lactose in these products varies and is sometimes quite low, so you may still be able to have some of them without experiencing any problems.

What should you avoid if you are lactose intolerant?

  • milk — all types of cow’s milk, goat’s milk, and buffalo milk.
  • cheese — especially soft cheeses, such as cream cheese, cottage cheese, mozzarella, and ricotta.
  • butter.
  • yogurt.
  • ice cream, frozen yogurt, and dairy-based sherbet.
  • buttermilk.

Can I eat cheese if I am lactose intolerant?

With lactose intolerance, you can still eat cheese, but choose carefully. Hard, aged cheeses like Swiss, parmesan, and cheddars are lower in lactose. Other low-lactose cheese options include cottage cheese or feta cheese made from goat or sheep’s milk.
