Here's one rule that will work for you in MOST situations. If the phrase comes immediately before the noun, use a hyphen, unless the first word is an -ly adjective: A well-read person. A light-blue car.

I just checked my American Heritage College Dictionary, Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, and Canadian Oxford Dictionary. All three indicate that well-known is hyphenated. ... The others appear with hyphens in only one or two dictionaries, or they appear closed up (wellborn) or open (well done).

Are well-read?

The dictionary definition says, “…a person knowledgeable and informed as a result of extensive reading.” ... To be “well-read” means to know a lot about multiple subjects because you've learned from multiple books in multiple genres about multiple time periods.
