Childhood

Ryan was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1950 to an Irish Catholic family. Emmet William Ryan, his father, was a Baltimore Police Department homicide lieutenant and World War II veteran. The elder Ryan had been a member of the US Army’s 101st Airborne Division 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment Easy Company during the Battle of the Bulge in western Europe. Catherine Burke Ryan, his mother, was a nurse. Patriot Games revealed that he had a sister in Seattle. Ryan attended Boston College after graduating from Loyola High School (now Loyola Blakefield), a Roman Catholic Jesuit prep school in Towson, Maryland, in suburban Baltimore County. This resulted in a lengthy recovery period (during which he became addicted to pain medications), after which he left the Marines, complete with a permanent disability and wearing a back brace.
