Janice Bryant Howroyd, born on September 1, 1952, is an African American entrepreneur. She is the founder and chief executive officer of ACT-1 Group, which is the largest minority woman-owned employment agency in the United States.

Originally from Tarboro, North Carolina, she graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in English from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. After her graduation, she made her way to Los Angeles, California, and began her career at Billboard magazine. The journey of ACT-1 started in a small Beverly Hills office in 1978, with Billboard being her first client. Today, the company has offices in 75 U.S. cities and serves clients such as Ford Motor Company, Cingular, and Sempra Energy.

In 2003, Howroyd’s company ranked third on the Black Enterprise magazine list of Top Black-Owned Industrial/Service Companies in America. She was honored with the Spirit of American Enterprise Presidential Award in 2005 and was named Entrepreneur of the Year by the BET cable television network three years later. The Foundation for Ethnic Understanding recognized her commitment to improving race relations by presenting her with the Joseph Papp Racial Harmony Award in 2013.
