Jonas Salk was a Jewish medical researcher and virologist born in New York City in 1914. He is best known for developing a vaccine against polio in 1955, which he never patented and thus made no money off of. In 1960, he founded the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, California and spent his later years attempting to find a cure to HIV.
