Early Life

Born to William Costner and Sharon Costner in Lynwood California, Kevin Costner grew up in a traditional blue-collar family. William Costner went from working as an electrician to having a traveling position with Southern California Edison which prompted the entire family to move. Throughout his early life, William Costner attended Baptist churches wherever they were staying and started to really enjoy being in the spotlight.

He did attend two different high schools, first Mt. Whitney High School and then Villa Park High School later on where he graduated. After high school, he attended California State University and started to dabble in his acting career. He did not major in acting, however, he pursued an arts degree in finance, graduating in 1978. 

The Beginning of Acting

After graduating from California State University Fullerton, Kevin Costner had a moment with the famous Richard Burton. During that interaction, Costner shifted his career focus and became motivated to pursue his true secret dream to pursue acting. 

In order to become better at his craft, he pursued acting classes regularly. Costner went the traditional Hollywood route of working various odd jobs and applied for auditions whenever he could. By the time the 1980s rolled around, Kevin Costner had a few roles under his belt and he began to generate traction in his acting career when he got his big break in 1987.
