Derrick Martell Rose was born on 4 October 1988 as an elder of three children of Brenda Rose. His father was absent in his childhoos so he was raised by a mother along with three brothers Dwayne, Reggie and Allan Rose.
Rose pursued his high school education at Simeon Career Academy in on the South Side of Chicago, Illinois. Afterward, he went to the University of Memphis to play college basketball. He stands at a height of 6 feet 3 inches (1.91 meters) and his listed weight is 190 lbs (86 kg).

While in the University, Derrick played college basketball for the University of Memphis Tigers from 2007 to 2008. He led the Tigers to the most wins in NCAA history (a 38–2 record), their first number 1 ranking in 25 years, and an appearance in the NCAA championship game.

Rose was selected by the Chicago Bulls with the first overall pick in the 2008 draft. He played for the Pistons until 2016 and was traded to the New York Knicks. After playing for a season with the Knicks, he signed with the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2017. However, in March 2019 Derrick was ruled out for the rest of the season with a right elbow injury. In July 2019, he signed with another NBA side, the Detroit Pistons.
