Lewis was in a relationship with Emmy Award-winning actor, Caitlin Clarke. They dated when they were both studying at Yale School of Drama. They remained in a relationship even after graduation. Their romance, however, ended when she moved to London for her work.
The comedian became bitter about their relationship when he found that she got engaged to another man only a few months after their split. Based on his bad experience with Caitlin, he wrote a play Hitchin. Caitlin's family attended the show; however, Caitlin never participated at any of the shows. Caitlin moreover was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2000, and she died in 2004.
Black further is close to Merican comedian Kathleen Madigan. His fans speculated Madigan to be his girlfriend. Madigan however, denied and told,

Lewis and fellow comedian Jim Norton was arrested in 2000 for their involvement with The Naked Teen Voyeur Bus. The bus had acrylic glass walls and contained numerous young topless women. The bus was driven around Manhattan in the same route that was used by then-President Bill Clinton on that day. Black was released twenty-eight hours after his arrest.
