Born Madison Nicole Ziegler on September 30, 2002 (age 17), in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to mother Melissa Ziegler-Gisoni and father Kurt Ziegler, Maddie and her sister Mackenzie Ziegler [net worth: $3.5 million] rose to fame with the reality show, Dance Mom, after Abby Lee Dance Company became famous. Two of her half-siblings, Tyler & Ryan, were from Kurt's first marriage before Melissa, while step-brother Matthew & step-sister Michelle were gained from Melissa's second marriage to Greg Gisoni since 2013.

Maddie's parents reportedly filed for bankruptcy in 2009 after owing over $1.2 million in credit card debt and spending almost twice as much as they earned. She started dancing when she was two and trained in the Abby Lee Dance Company when she was four with her sister Mackenzie, who was two. When the dance academy started growing in popularity, right after her parents separated in 2010, their very own reality show, Dance Mom, aired in mid-2011.

She and Mackenzie starred on the show from 2011 to 2016 as they then left the show to pursue the avenues they already explored while on the show. While appearing on the show, the older Ziegler sister got her big dance break with Sia's music video for Chandelier, which, with her skills, became one of the most-viewed videos on YouTube, with over 2.2 billion views. It was just a roller-coaster for her since then as she became the face of the singer while she hides half of her face and toured with her during the Nostalgic for the Present Tour in 2016/2017.

Reality TV with 'Dance Moms', Dancing & Acting Side by Side: Maddie Became an Actor Before Mackenzie Did

Before getting on TV with Dance Moms, Maddie had already won several honors with her sister when dancing to Abby Lee Dance Company’s Abby Lee Dance Company Elite Competition Team. And in late 2010, she performed for Paula Abdul's reality show, Live to Dance’s first episode which aired on January 4, 2011. She also featured in the Dance Mom’s spin-off show, Abby's Ultimate Dance Competition. Like her sister, she was said to have added $1,000 to $2,000 per episode from Dance Moms to her net worth.

While Mackenzie got her first scripted role in 2015, Maddie had her break just after the first season of Dance Moms. She featured in an episode of Lifetime series Drop Dead Diva in 2012 as Young Deb. She guest-starred in a short TV series HitStreak episode in 2014. The Dance Moms alum didn't have a big TV series of her own like her sister, but she did feature in a lot of movies. Her first movie role came in 2016 when she signed for The Book of Henry with Naomi Watts and Jacob Tremblay for a weekly rate of $3,460, for six weeks of employment. The movie came out in June 2017 as she worked for it right after leaving her reality stardom from Dance Moms.

She'd already lent her voice for the 2016 animated movie, Leap!. For now, she had three major projects in the works — Sia-directed film Music, Steven Spielberg's remake of West Side Story and The Fallout with Jenna Ortega, all set for a 2020 release.

Judging for Dance Shows Came Pretty Easy for Someone of Her Stature

For a 17-year-old, she has quite an extensive reality acting credit. Well, being a part of a completely new MTV Video Music Awards-winning song [for best choreography & nomination for Video of the Year] has that effect. Chandelier was a completely different style for Maddie, freestyle to be exact in comparison to all her other projects before.

Chandelier won the 2014 ARIA Music Award for Best Video and was also nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Music Video in 2015. With such a break, Ziegler became a staple dance for Sia's music video starring in her latter songs, Elastic Heart with Shia LeBeouf & Big Girls Cry for her debut-comeback album, 1000 Forms of Fear. And thus, Maddie had the privilege to appear with her to perform on various talk shows a bunch of times, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Dancing with the Stars, The Voice and even Saturday Night Live. She'd also performed with Sia and Kristen Wiig at the 2015 Grammys.

Maddie later also performed on Sia's music video Cheap Thrills for the 2016 album This Is Acting, her single The Greatest later that year, the song Rainbow for the movie My Little Pony and then worked with LSD (Labrinth, Sia, Diplo) for their videos of Thunderclouds [2018] and No New Friends [2019]. But more importantly, she was supporting her sister with her music career as well. Mackenzie is obviously qualified to dance on her own songs, but Maddie has featured on Mackenzie's first music video, a very successful one at that, It's a Girl Party, as well as her earlier one, Lazy Song, and her later one, Shine.

The two had featured in a WowWee commercial in 2015 as Keeping Up with the Quadashians was the common episode of Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn they featured in January 2017. Maddie also appeared on Dancing with the Stars: Juniors to support her sister. But the biggest thing in between had to be being a judge on Fox's So You Think You Can Dance: The Next Generation, a spin-off for dancer between the age of 8 and 14.
