Margaret Nyamumbo: Kenyan Woman Wins Ksh 44M in Us Tv Show

Margaret Nyamumbo, the CEO and founder of Kahawa 1893, a company that exports African coffee to the United States, has gained notoriety and a KSh44 million investment in her business.

This was after her successful appearance on the American reality TV show 'Shark Tank.'

Nyamumbo, who moved to the US to obtain her MBA from Harvard Business School and worked on Wall Street, pitched her business to the panel of investors, or "sharks".

They included Mark Cuban, Emma Grede, Robert Herjavec, Kevin O'Leary, and Lori Greiner.

"We are very proud of the coffee that grows on our soil; unfortunately, farmers don’t always make enough for the delicious coffee that they produce," she told the panel.

"In fact, 90% of the labour and coffee come from women, but so many are not compensated because they do not own the land," she added.

KSh 44 million funding

She explained the unique nature of her business, which sources coffee directly from women farmers in Africa and allows customers to tip the coffee farmers.

"We source our coffee directly from women farmers in Africa, but that’s not all, we go one step further, our customers can tip the coffee farmers and we match the tips," she said.

Nyamumbo's pitch captivated the sharks, and after intense negotiations, Emma Grede acquired an 8% stake in Kahawa 1893 for $350,000 (KSh 44 million)

Nyamumbo's presentation has drawn admiration from many, including Kenyans on Twitter, who commended her on her confidence and sales skills.

Her success on 'Shark Tank' has brought positive attention to her company and its mission to compensate coffee farmers fairly.
