Messaging App with Red Indicator Icon

I am looking for a messenger app like gtalk or whatsapp that will always run either actively or in the background. Will switch from wifi our data automatically. And has an indicator icon of the number of missed messages on the home screen icon. An example of this its the SMS indicator. I'd prefer not to rely on the status bar for this information. Is there something out there like this? I am using the Samsung Mesmerize. Thank you all for your help.
