Michelle Phillips, whose actual name is Holly Michelle Gilliam, was born in Long Beach, California, on June 4, 1944. Joyce Leone (née Poole; November 2, 1920 – January 18, 1950) and Gardner Burnett Gilliam (July 18, 1914 – March 22, 1996) were her parents.

Her mother worked as an accountant, and her father worked as a merchant mariner. Russell Ann (April 17, 1943 – December 10, 2018) was her older sister. Michelle’s mother died at the age of five from a brain hemorrhage. Her father moved to Mexico after her mother died, where he studied sociology at Mexico City College.

When it came to her schooling, she went to public schools in Mexico and became fluent in Spanish as a result. Michelle’s family relocated to Los Angeles when she was 13 years old.
