Ming-Na was born in Colane, Macau, Portugal. She relocated to Harelm, New York, after living in Hong Kong, and eventually settled in Pennsylvania with her family. She received her schooling at Carnegie Mellon University, where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Theatre. Following this, she landed her first television job in the 1985 sitcom Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. She then participated in the soap series As the World Turns and the critically praised 1993 film The Joy Luck Club. She was later cast as Dr. Jing Mei Deb Chen in the NBC show ER, where she received critical acclaim. She was a regular on the show until 2004, when she moved on to The Single Guy.
