Mitchell was born in a Jewish family. Mitchell grew up in Bethesda, Maryland. In 1974, he graduated from Walt Whitman High School. In 1978, Mitchell went on to pursue higher education where he studied business administration from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He was also a member of Beta, Theta and Pi fraternity.
