Nba Urges Tinubu to Prioritize Security

Expressing concern over the prevailing insecurity across various parts of Nigeria in 2023, the Nigerian Bar Association has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to show more commitment to safeguarding the lives and properties of citizens in 2024.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the President of the NBA, Yakubu Maikyau, decried the state of insecurity and condemned the Christmas Eve attacks in Plateau State, which resulted in the deaths of over 100 people.

Maikyau emphasized that the government needs to ensure comprehensive governance throughout the country and must not allow any space to be ungoverned. He urged for substantial security investments that demonstrate the government’s sincere commitment to protecting Nigerians.

Highlighting the alarming statistics of insecurity between May and December 2023, which included over 4,258 incidents in 573 local government areas and led to the deaths of at least 5,691 people, Maikyau underscored the pressing need for the government to adopt a holistic approach to the security situation.

Furthermore, the NBA president denounced the accidental airstrike in Kaduna, describing it as inexcusable and pointing out the lack of synergy among security agencies in the country.

On the economic front, the NBA President called for additional measures to address the challenges arising from the subsidy removal and urged for budgetary reforms to stimulate the economy without causing inflation. He stressed the importance of reassuring Nigerians that their sacrifices will yield tangible outcomes.
