Nico’s father, Lewis Hernandez introduced him to boxing at the age of nine, which had a huge impact on Nico’s further career development as he competed in the National Junior Olympics in 2011 and 2012. His father also coached his best friend, Tony Losey and the duo achieved notable success with Nico winning his first 25 fights. Moving forward, in his fourth fight, Nico lost to Hasanboy Dusmatov, who despite winning the fight described his match with Hernandez as one of the most difficult ones he had.

After his Olympic success, Nico stated that he planned to turn to professional, with his father remaining his coach. He made his debut as a professional on 25 March 2017 in a six-round fight broadcast by CBS, winning against Patrick Gutierrez.
