A visual field defect is a loss of part of the usual field of vision, so it does not include severe visual impairment of either one eye or both. The lesion may be anywhere along the optic pathway; retina to occipital cortex.
How do you detect visual field defects?
Visual fields are frequently evaluated by simply covering one eye and asking the patient to look straight ahead while using peripheral vision to identify an object, or the number of fingers shown by the examiner. The field is often tested at only four locations, which is sensitive only for large field defects.

How are visual field defects treated?
Optical aids such as prism glasses can be used to reduce the apparent visual field loss by shifting visual stimuli from the blind field into the patient's seeing field. These prisms are fitted to spectacles but need to be restricted to just one half of each of the lenses (typically on the side of the blind field).
