One Piece Film Red Story Peek Teases Luffy's Straw Hat Lore Reveal

The upcoming One Piece anime movie, One Piece Film Red, just published a new story teaser and implied we’ll learn more about Luffy and Shanks’ iconic straw hat.

One Piece Film Red is still in production, and fans are eagerly waiting for an international release. The movie’s Japanese official Twitter account has been sharing several teasers of the film’s storyboards, and the latest tweet is an iconic shot of Luffy and his straw hat.

One Piece Film Red new storyboard teaser hints at straw hat lore reveal

The One Piece Film Red movie shared its storyboard teaser volume 2, which was curiously titled “the straw hat”, featuring a character wearing the iconic symbol. While some fans have been discussing whether this is supposed to be Shanks or Luffy, the tweet specifically states it’s Luffy and mentions: “Who or what is Luffy up against?”. The same text is written on the storyboard image itself, which you can check out below.

Even those who aren’t keeping up with One Piece anymore obviously know Luffy’s straw hat used to belong to Shanks, so it’s not surprising we’ll get to learn more about it here. After all, this new movie is the “Shanks movie” fans have been waiting for.

We aren’t certain yet whether the movie’s events will be canon or not. However, we will definitely learn some new canon lore through it, with details on Shanks’ past. Especially seeing One Piece Film Red is one of the rare One Piece movies directly supervised by Eiichiro Oda. And as a reminder, the movie’s director is Goro Taniguchi, coming back to the franchise after 20 years.
