Parole Violation May Send Former Millbury Man Back to Prison

A former Wood County man who was released from prison early may be heading back after violating his
parole.
Kevin Byington, 30, formerly of Millbury and most recently of Sylvania, violated his parole after being
arrested for domestic violence in January.
During a bond hearing Friday in in the courtroom of Wood County Common Pleas Judge Matt Reger, cash bond
was set at $75,000 with no 10% with a parole violation hearing set for March 6 at 1 p.m. Byington is in
the Wood County Justice Center.
Byington was the second man to be sentenced in the 2015 death of Brandon Morris, 30, Northwood. Morris
died in Lake Township of a reported heroin overdose.
Byington and his co-defendant, Joshua Melnek, 31, Millbury, had been indicted on one count each of
involuntary manslaughter, a first-degree felony, and reckless homicide, a third-degree felony.
Melnek pleaded to the amended counts of tampering with evidence and permitting drug abuse and was
sentenced in July 2016 to three years in prison.
Byington pleaded guilty in August 2017 to the amended count of tampering with evidence, a third-degree
felony, with the involuntary manslaughter count being dismissed. He was sentenced in August 2017 to 36
months in jail with credit for 39 days in jail.
The case came before the court on Oct. 5, 2018 for a hearing on judicial release. The request was granted
and Byington was given five years community control.
He was charged with domestic violence Jan. 8 in Sylvania Muncipal Court, which violated his community
control.
A second condition of community control was that Byington not consume alcohol. On Feb. 11, 2020, he took
a mandatory drug screen, which yielded positive results for alcohol.
