Porn stars around the globe are at risk of becoming jobless as the industry will start to shift towards virtual reality porn, creating reasonably cheap robots for the viewers, instead of hiring actors for thousands of rupees.

All of your favourite porn stars may soon become obsolete.

Not because they're embarking on a mass retirement plan, or that they're leaving for greener pastures, but because the industry is changing, and their jobs are at risk in favour of virtual reality technology.

Like many jobs that are at risk, thanks to the influx of robots storming the market head-on, the adult film industry may lean towards creating robots to please its customers over hiring an actor to perform the same work.

VR porn is on the rise, and should the industry begin to venture off into this type of entertainment, it's going to be extremely hard for porn stars to find work. If you think about it, beyond being cheaper, the user will also have more control over his or her “destiny.”

“A human won't be able to compete in this world,” said Dr. Ian Pearson, who works as a senior futurologist at Futurizon, a communication agency based in Ipswich. “A studio will be able to hire a porn actor for a few thousand dollars or just rent the software and create one for less.”

It's all about user control, too, according to Brian Shuster, who is the CEO of virtual worlds website, Red Light Centre.

"If people actually want to participate in their sexual fantasies--and I think they do--it will eventually eliminate the role of the porn stars as we know it."

As more advanced porn tech is expected to hit the market within the next 10 years, the fate almost fully relies in the viewer's hands.

"One option will be much like a Star Trek holodeck for your fantasy. You decide, for example, what size you want her breasts to be, what lingerie she wears and how tall she is."

Unlike the viewer, actors will surely struggle with the switch, considering their profession is on the line. The viewer, though, won't be as affected. As technology takes aim at professions that have been thriving for decades, the industry, as a whole, will have to adapt.

“As a porn star, you absolutely have to worry about your job in the current climate,” said Cindy Gallop, founder of MakeLoveNotPorn.com, a site where people share videos of real sex with their partners. “Porn is so big that it has become conventional, and it's tanking much in the way that the music business and journalism did.”

It's safe to say the robot revolution is upon us, and it's going to change our sex lives, too.
