Contents

In Windows XP, 7, 8, 8.1 and 10, you can configure how much disk space is reserved for restore points.

There must be at least 1 gigabyte of free space on the disk for System Protection to work.

See the Free up disk space in Windows article if your device is tight on space.

How much disk space do I need for System Restore?

Well simple answer is you need at least 300 megabytes (MB) of free space on each disk that is 500 MB or larger. “System Restore might use between three and five percent of the space on each disk. As the amount of space fills up with restore points, it deletes older restore points to make room for new ones.

Where are system restore points stored Windows 10?

You can see all available restore points in Control Panel / Recovery / Open System Restore. Physically, the system restore point files are located in the root directory of your system drive (as a rule, it is C:), in the folder System Volume Information. However, by default users don’t have access to this folder.
