She spent some of her childhood in Liberia and grew up in Cliffwood Beach and Edison, New Jersey. In high school, she was a member of various clubs and graduated from Matawan Regional High School in 1988. She then attended Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, where she studied sociology and graduated in 1992.
