Rod Carew is a Panamanian-born professional baseball player and coach. He was a first baseman, second baseman, and designated hitter, who played for the Minnesota Twins and the California Angels, and coached the California/Anaheim Angels and the Milwaukee Brewers, in Major League Baseball (MLB). He is in the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Rod was born in Gatún, Panama Canal Zone, the son of Olga Teoma and Eric S. Carew. His parents were both black. He has African-Barbadian and African-Panamanian ancestry. He was named after the doctor who helped deliver him, Rodney Cline. Rod moved to Washington Heights, Manhattan, New York City, New York, when he was fourteen.

Rod is married to Rhonda. He has three children with his first wife Marilynn Levy. Marilynn is Jewish. Rod himself has been described as Jewish many times, including in Adam Sandler’s The Chanukah Song. However, it appears that he is not of Jewish ancestry, nor he has converted to Judaism.

Rod’s paternal grandfather was named Lambert Fitzgerald Carew. Lambert was born on Barbados.
