It became THE material for whitewater and river tripping canoes. And then it died. In 2013 the plastics company PolyOne purchased Spartech, who had the rights to manufacture Royalex. Due to low demand for the material, they shipped the last sheets of it in December 2013 and closed production.
What has replaced Royalex?
Chasse set out on a four-year quest to develop a Royalex replacement. The end result was T-Formex, a material that perfectly mimics the performance profile of Royalex. T-Formex is a foam-core sandwich of ABS plastic with a proprietary outer skin.
When did Old Town start using Royalex?
In 1940, the company produced its first kayak. Fiberglass canoes were manufactured starting in 1965. In 1972, Old Town Canoe started thermoforming Royalex, a composite ABS sheet from the former Uniroyal Plastics Co.
Are all old town camper Royalex?
It is indeed royalex but it is not a Penobscot. The Penobscot is more of a touring/tripping canoe while the Camper is a recreation canoe. The Penobscot 16 (P16) is a fine canoe and can be used both tandem and solo. IMHO the P16 is a better canoe than the P17.
