Sara Ramirez was born in Sinaloa, northwest of Mexico, on 31st August 1975. Her parents got divorced when she was just eight, after which she moved to San Diego with her mother. She was interested in music from a very young age. Her acting career started in high school after she started performing for the school production.
She studied at the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts after passing audition and went on to complete her high school from there.
