Early Life and Military Service

Shaggy, born Orville Richard Burrell in Kingston, Jamaica on October 22, 1968, moved to Brooklyn, New York City with his parents at the age of 7. He attended Erasmus Hall High and began singing lessons in 1987. The following year, he was discovered while singing with friends on the streets of New York City.

In 1988, Shaggy joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served in the 10th Marine Regiment during the Persian Gulf War. He held the Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) of Field Artillery Cannon Crewman (0811) and reached the rank of Lance Corporal, although it was reduced twice. In a 2011 interview, Shaggy revealed that he struggled with being AWOL due to his music pursuits and his tendency to speak his mind.
