Should a Receipt Be Signed?

The simple receipt should be signed by a representative of the business receiving the payment. This type of receipt is also known as a sales receipt template.

Does a receipt need to be signed?

On the last line of the receipt write the customer's full name. If they paid by credit card, have them sign the bottom of the receipt. Then, make a copy of the receipt and keep it for your records and hand the customer the original receipt.

Why must a receipt be signed?

For decades, credit card companies relied on receipt signatures to prevent fraud. They required merchants to collect and store customer signatures so that if a transaction was disputed, the merchant could produce a signed receipt proving the customer was physically in the store and personally approved the purchase.
