Should Amsonia Be Cut Back

Plants must be cut back in either the late fall or late winter to about 8 inches from the ground. Remember to wear gloves when working with Amsonia since stems release a white sap. Though not required, cutting them back again half way to the ground after flowering will result in even fuller growth.

Should I deadhead Amsonia?

Planting Amsonia in too much shade may cause the plant to spread as it grows or to flop open instead of growing into a neat mound. You can also deadhead Amsonia after flowering to prevent self-seeding and to keep the stems from flopping over due to the weight of developing seed pods.

How do you fertilize Amsonia?

Use a water-soluble fertilizer when the new leaves begin to emerge. At a rate of 50-100 ppm nitrogen constant liquid feed whenever you water the plant. Fertilizer needs to be slow-released at an average rate so it applies evenly to the plant. Moisture should be moderate, and well-drained soil is needed.
