The border collie's grooming needs are extremely basic. Even the show standard for a border collie only calls for minimal trimming around the feet and the back of the legs to give a tidier appearance. So while you can, of course, groom these areas (or have a professional do it), they're unnecessary.
Should you clip a border collie?
Should Border Collies get haircuts? Generally speaking, no. If you decide to clip your border collie, the hair won't grow back in the same way and could cause problems. This means that you could impact their coat during the winter months and impact on their warmth and protection.
How often should a border collie be groomed?
The Border Collie has a double coat with the guard coat longer than the undercoat and needs to be groomed every 4 – 8 weeks, with more frequent grooming during the shedding seasons of spring and fall when they change coats. As long as the undercoat is removed the outer guard coat will provide shade for your dog.
