Should Burn Blisters Be Covered?

Bandage the burn.
Cover the burn with a sterile gauze bandage (not fluffy cotton). Wrap it loosely to avoid putting pressure on burned skin. Bandaging keeps air off the area, reduces pain and protects blistered skin.

What should I put on a burn blister?

An opened blister can get infected. You may put a thin layer of ointment, such as petroleum jelly or aloe vera, on the burn. The ointment does not need to have antibiotics in it. Some antibiotic ointments can cause an allergic reaction.

Should a burn be covered?

Cover the burn with a nonstick dressing (for example, Telfa) and hold it in place with gauze or tape. Check the burn every day for signs of infection, such as increased pain, redness, swelling or pus. If you see any of these signs, go to your doctor right away. To prevent infection, avoid breaking blisters.
