Delphiniums are a favorite of many gardeners, but can sometimes be a challenge. They prefer moist, cool summers and do not fare well in hot, dry weather. The plants also dislike sudden wind or rain. Except for the dwarf perennials, most delphiniums need staking.
Do you need to stake delphiniums?
Staking and support is essential for delphiniums as they are tall, heavy plants with hollow stems. You can sink three bamboo canes around each plant and use string to create a 'cage' support.
How do you keep delphiniums from falling over?
Stake early
Tall giants fall hard. Begin staking delphiniums early, when they are only 30 centimetres tall. Use a grow-through type of plant support that will hold up the stems when they are holding heavy blooms and a thunderstorm moves through the garden.
