Pruning: Deutzia blooms on the previous year's growth (known as "old wood"). Pruning is seldom needed, but remove any dead wood or shape the plant immediately after flowering is complete for the season.
Should I prune my deutzia?
No pruning of deutzia is normally necessary. However, when the plants are fully mature, an occasional thinning out of the old worn out branches may well be helpful in encouraging more subsequent flowering. These plants can also readily be cut back hard if necessary in a border when they are dormant.
When should I prune deutzia?
If your deutzia needs pruning, the best time to do this is in summer after the plant has flowered. Most gardeners think it is a shame to prune before flowering as this reduces the number of flowers. To keep the plant reasonably compact, the side branches can be cut back to just above a leaf.
