Should You Debride Granulation Tissue?

Once granulation tissue is established, the enzymatic debriding agent can be discontinued, but it is safe to use until wound closure. This ointment is ideal for patients receiving anticoagulant therapy for whom surgical debridement is not feasible.

When should you not debride wounds?

For example, debridement is not appropriate for dry necrotic tissue or gangrene without infection, as found in the ischaemic diabetic foot, where the most appropriate decision may be to leave the devitalised tissue to dry to such an extent that the necrotic tissue separates from the limb (auto-amputation) (Figure 2).

Do you Debride granulation tissue?

Granulation tissue sets the stage for epithelial tissue to be laid down on top of the wound bed. Pale, unhealthy granulation tissue, as noted above, can result from lack of good blood supply and angiogenesis. Pale granulation tissue needs to be freshened up with debridement to stimulate new ingrowth of blood vessels.
