Should You Put Aquarium Plants?

The short answer is no, not necessarily. Live aquarium plants are not absolutely essential for creating a functioning, healthy fish tank. However, while they are not compulsory, aquarium plants do bring many benefits to a fish tank and its inhabitants.

Are plants bad for fish tanks?

Rotted plant material can decay in your aquarium and build up ammonia in your tank. As ammonia builds up, the ammonia turns into nitrite. Nitrite, in high levels, is toxic to your fish. When a plant is healthy and well taken care of, it absorbs and neutralizes ammonia to keep your tank water healthy for your fish.

Can you put aquarium plants?

In a planted aquarium, plants can outcompete algae and use much of the nutrients in the water. Once a planted aquarium is balanced, the live plants will help keep the aquarium free of algae, reducing the need to scrub algae off decor.
