Early childhood and education

Tipper Gore was born Mary Elizabeth Aitcheson in Washington, D.C., the daughter of plumbing-supply entrepreneur John Kenneth “Jack” Aitcheson, Jr., and owner of J & H Aitcheson Plumbing Supply, and his first wife, Margaret Ann (née Carlson) Odom (who lost her first husband during World War II). Her mother gave her the nickname “Tipper” after a lullaby she had heard. Gore was raised in Arlington, Virginia. After her parents divorced, she was raised by her mother and grandmother.

She went to St. Agnes (now St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes School), a private Episcopal school in Alexandria, Virginia, where she played basketball, softball, and field hockey, as well as drums for The Wildcats, an all-female band.
