At the age of five, his family moved to Genesee, Michigan, where he later attended Genesee High School. During his time there, he played football, baseball, and basketball.
After high school, Gores enrolled at Michigan State University, where he worked as a telemarketer and janitor to support himself. In 1986, he graduated from Michigan State with a Bachelor of Arts in construction management.
