Aeschylus and his Greek contemporaries believed that the gods begrudged human greatness and sent infatuation on a man at the height of his success, thus bringing him to disaster. Man's infatuated act was frequently one of impiety or pride (hubris), for which his downfall could be seen as a just punishment.
