Was Waikiki a Swamp?

It may be hard to believe that Waikiki, a vision of golden sand and bustling energy, was once a swamp. The marshy land was home to rice paddies and taro patches farmed by native Hawaiians until 1928, when the Ala Wai Canal was built.

How Waikiki Beach was formed?

Following World War II and the onset of tourism and flights to Hawaii, Waikiki beach restoration efforts boomed and have never ceased. Sand was imported to this artificially made beach from the 1920's to the 1970's, once by boat and barge from Southern California.

Where did the sand in Waikiki come from?

Sand from China. Two barges arrived only 20 years ago intended for a beach not far from Waikiki. But most of the sand on Waikiki and other engineered beaches in Hawaii comes from, well, Hawaii. From dune systems, from other islands and from Waikiki itself, taken from the undersea foreshore right in front of the beach.
